    About Sankeien
    Sankeien was created by Sankei Hara, a businessman who made his fortune through the silk trade. The garden, which covers approximately 17.5 hectares （ (about 3.7 times the size of the Tokyo Dome), is a Japanese garden where visitors can enjoy seasonal scenery in harmony with ancient architecture and nature. When the garden first opened, the garden was opened to the public free of charge for 24 hours a day under the slogan "free to visit," reflecting Hara Sankei's belief that "beautiful things should be enjoyed by everyone together. During Hara Sankei's lifetime, the garden also served as a place to nurture and support budding artists, and is highly regarded for its contribution to Japanese art, having produced artists such as Yokoyama Taikan, Shimomura Kanzan, and Maeda Seison. In 1953 （ Showa 28 ）, the Hara family transferred the property to the City of Yokohama, and the Sankeien Hoshokukai Foundation was established, which continues to this day. Of the 17 old buildings in the park, 10 are designated as Important Cultural Properties and 3 as Tangible Cultural Properties by the City of Yokohama.

    About Hara Sankei
    Hara Sankei （ Real name Tomitaro ） ＜ 1868 （ Keio 4 ） - 1939 （ Showa 14 ）

    Born in Saba-mura, Atsumi-gun, Gifu Prefecture, （ the eldest son of the Aoki family who had been village headman for generations in ） present-day Yanaizu-cho, Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture. He studied painting ・ Chinese studies ・ and poetry from childhood, and in 1885 （ Meiji 18 ） entered Tokyo Senmon Gakko （ now Waseda University ） and studied politics ・ law. 1888 （ Meiji 21 ） Around 1888, he became an assistant teacher at Atomi School, and in 1891 （ Meiji 24 ） married Yaju, a granddaughter of Zenzaburo Hara, and joined the Hara family. After taking over the Hara family business, he focused on the modernization and internationalization of management and became a successful businessman. After the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, he devoted himself to the reconstruction of the devastated city of Yokohama. Sankei himself was an avid calligrapher and painter, and some of his works are housed in the Sankei Memorial Museum in the park.
